Since I am typically poking fun at other Christians in the Stuff Christians Like series, I decided to make fun of myself in this one. I am a member of a listserv known as Evangelicals for Social Action, and today they listed a few of these on their website. We added a few ourselves, and you get bonus points if you can tell which I wrote, and which were on the original list. Do you have any to add?
You know you are an Evangelical for Social Action if:
…You’d rather watch Tony Campolo than Tony Soprano
…You consider it an act of worship to compost your food scraps
… You changed your voter registration from Independent to Democrat in the current election
…You aren’t sure why, but something about James Dobson just makes you uncomfortable
…You bought your baby organic onesies
…You believe the adjective holistic improves most nouns
…You really cannot understand why some people don’t like Michael Moore
…You believe some methods of evangelism should be illegal
…You can’t help but secretly feel that those working for non-profits or social service agencies are inherently more spiritual
…You’ve ever asked for the TNIV at a Southern Baptist bookstore just to create an awkward moment
…Your idea of the perfect vacation includes staying at a carbon neutral resort in Costa Rica
…You own, or are pining after, a toyota Prius
…Your refrigerator consistently has an update letter on it from International Justice Mission or Heifer International
…You’ve ever wondered what Jesus would do when asked paper? or plastic?
…You’ve considered becoming an ex-pat in Canada or Europe
…You’ve ever wondered whether AM talk radio was a plot of the devil
…You’ve ever given someone a copy of Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger or Ministries of Mercy as a Birthday present.
…You’re convinced breastfeeding will keep your baby from ever getting a cold.
…

Wait. . .I have colds because I was weaned? I should’ve stayed on the teat forever.

Have you read the book Crunchy Cons: How Birkenstocked Burkeans, gun-loving organic gardeners, evangelical free-range farmers, hip homeschooling mamas, right-wing nature lovers, … America (or at least the Republican Party)?
It’s wonderful, in my opinion. It’s about Christians (or other religious people) who are truly conservative in all aspects of life (including caring for the enviornment, appreciating quality architecture, eating healthily, etc.). I appreciated the author’s take on conservatism, and the fact that there are other people in the world like me, caring for things like social justice but not at the cost of liberalizing Christianity.
