If you pick up the back of the book and it reads like this….
“Summer winds blow across the acrid, yet, beautiful western landscape, while Hannah, listlessly ponders which man to love. Although her chores are calling her; the water must be drawn, the cows milked, and Father’s shoes shined for his trip to town, she pauses to dream about her future. She is simply torn between two loves. Does she follow Luke, the rugged, wild, and handsome man of the forest? or his brother William, the quiet minister, who will always provide for her, but promises a life of mediocrity? “
If you encounter such “literature” i.e. supermarket romance novels minus the dirty details, you have stumbled upon Christian women’s all time favorite stories. Forget Desperate Housewives! Historical Romantic Fiction is the book version of the lifetime channel without nudity, it’s a winner all around! These books are always in one of three settings… the newly settled west, the english countryside, or small town USA. It is always the same plot lines… a young heroine, her father’s favorite, trying to choose between staying near the homestead or running out west with the wagon train. OR…. the “aging” not yet married eldest girl, who longs for life beyond her home, and falls in love with the dashing new one room schoolhouse teacher.
Christian women inhale them to escape their reality because it lifts you out of your humdrum sippy cup, casserole, and minivan existence into a simpler time! What better way to rekindle your love for literature?! So… if you have to buy a gift for a Christian gal and you just don’t know where to turn… be rest assured that anything with a title like “Ohio Bride” (if they or someone in their Bible Study don’t already own it) will be a sure winner!!! Bonus!!!!— If your Middle Schooler is beginning to like boys and boy bands, buy her one of these books and she can have romance and clean reading all in one place!

I didn’t know I was pondering my love life. Thanks for letting me know.
And don’t ask why I’m up so late. xD

I think everyone of these books rips off the Virginian. If you’ve ever read that you know what I’m talking about. Also none of these are ever made into movies.
Also I think there’s a subversive “women evening up the score” element in these books. In the Bible, playas like David, Absalom and even Abraham were up to their necks in hotties. They not only had multiple wives, they even had sub-wives, or concubines if you will. If either of those ladies didn’t conceive immediately, they sent in the maid. That’s 3 different chick pools by my count.
This “hot but virtuous woman in demand,” “I can pick only one” stuff to me smacks of setting things right for thousands of years of all-male all-the-time repression.

…the only historic romantic fiction that is worth reading is anything ever written by Jane Austen.

I have to say, I enjoy George MacDonald’s insights into the human condition in his romantic fiction.

I’m a big fan of Romantic Fiction, but I like the chick flicks. My favorite is What a Girl Wants. LOVE that book! Anyway, I’m sure I’d fall in love with these books as well. I might have to check one out at the librarby sometime.
